01 cala macarelleta spain

What makes it extra jaw-dropping? That stunning shades of impeccably clear turquoise water and white sandy beaches. It’s surrounded by cliffs covered by pine trees and holm oaks. The best absolute views can be seen from the elevated cliffs in between the two coves. So don’t be lazy and hike up!

2. Egremni Beach in Lefkada Island, Greece

02 Egremni beach lefkada greece

What makes it extra jaw-dropping? It’s the longest beach in Lefkada at 2.5 kilometers long. This means that it’s never really that crowded even when it’s peak season.

3. Calanque d’En Vau in Cassis, France

03 calanque d'en vau france

What makes it extra jaw-dropping? V-shaped beach nestled between two cliffs and when it’s sunny the seabed gives the sea an extraordinary shade of green colour.

5. Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera, Spain (nudist)

05 Playa de Ses Illetes Formentera Spain

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? For decades this has been Formentera’s fashion beach where party animals go for day trips from Ibiza after a long night of rocking it out at the clubs. And oh, most of Formentera’s beaches are unofficially nudists by the way.

6. Cala Mariolu in Sardinia, Italy

06 cala mariolu sardinia italy

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? The cove is characterized by small smooth pebbles and when you walk on stones it’s as if you are walking on a soft carpet. It’s also great for diving.

8. Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa, Sicily, Italy

08 rabbit beach lampedusa italy

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? It’s one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs. Um, they should just change the name to Loggerhead Beach instead?

9. Navagio Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

09 Navagio beach zakynthos greece

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? It’s history. Navagio derives the name “Shipwreck” from a boat named Panagiotis that wrecked in 1983 in the cove while transporting cigarettes. I wouldn’t mind being shipwrecked in this place. Who’s with me?

10. Praia da Marinha in Algarve, Portugal

10 praia da marinha algarve portugal

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? Those beautiful cliffs have been quite ubiquitous on Portugal’s tourism campaigns and for good reason. Apparently it’s also considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe. Michelin guide for beaches or countries? I didn’t know they also publish such guides! Did you?

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? Myrtos has been described as “one of the most dramatic beaches in Greece”, with its “mile-and-a-half long arc of dazzling white pebbles.”

16. Sveti Stefan Beach in Budva, Montenegro

16 aman-sveti-stefan budva montenegro

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? How many of your friends have been to Montenegro? I rest my case.

17. Viareggio in Versilia, Italy

17 viareggio versilia italy

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? Renowned for its Italian Art Nouveau architecture, the Tuscan beach town of Viareggio is again in vogue. There is 15-kilometer-long beach that goes from Forte dei Marmi in the north to Viareggio in the south. I fell in love with the Tuscan Riviera when I went here last summer. The photo is taken at Bagno Arizona in Viareggio.

18. Elafonissi Beach in  Crete, Greece

18 Elafonissi Beach Crete Greece

What makes it extra-jaw-dropping? The sand of Elafonissi Beach is white, but in many places it is pinkish due to the thousands of broken seashells it contains.

Have you been to any of these beaches?
