Why? Because it sucks. And I’m letting you know to save your dollars. I’m talking to you, newbie traveler, because you are most likely the one who’s going to buy a Lonely Planet guide book. Don’t. Just don’t.

Why does it suck? Because it’s totally useless. For example, have you seen a copy of Lonely Planet’s Europe on a Shoestring? It’s thick and it looks like its full of useful information to help you wing it on a budget.

The operative words here are LOOKS LIKE.

When I started my Euro Trips, I’ve always wondered how much it would cost and my research has led me to check out a copy of this book. And you know, I kept flipping through pages and pages of useless shit and in the end, I never really got an answer as to how to travel in Europe on a shoestring budget.

Thank God, I only downloaded a copy from the internet! If you want a copy, don’t EVER buy! There are loads of free downloads in the internet.

And another reason not to buy it? It’s heavy. You don’t want to be carrying two extra kilos of useless shit in your backpack.

And what else sucks?

Thorn Tree Forum sucks.

The “Scorntree”, as it is rather accurately referred to, is full of three types of people: The Stupid Traveler, The Racist&Homophobic Maniacs and The Scorntree Warlords. Who are these people?

The Stupid Traveler are those idiots who writes 1 or 2 posts in the forum asking stupid things like “How to go to Paris from Paris Beauvais airport?” Google it, stupid. The forum is full of this type of people. Have a quick look and you will see what I mean.

The Racist&Homophobic Maniacs are those who troll the forums posting off-topic and often racially and sexually insulting comments. Check out the South East Asia thread. Lots of awful aggression towards women. A sample question is: “Can anyone update how much a prostitute in Thailand is now?”

The Scorntree Warlords are easy to spot. They have a million posts under their belt. And they’re more likely to complain about the typical American or Ozzies who posts about their Euro Trail for instance. The funny thing is that they will reply to your posts anyway. Like 10 paragraphs long. And what’s worse? They hang around the forum, like, every minute of their lives, making sure their online kingdom is safe from being taken away from them. I thought you hate most people in the forum? The truth is, they don’t have friends in real life and this is their only avenue to talk to people. Notice how they all know each other like the losers from high school.

Every now and then, you do get useful info from the forum but you have to wade through a sea of obnoxiousness and attitude. The people there are mostly unfriendly and act as if they’re the only ones who know how to travel, specially those Scorntree Warlords. No one moderates the forum. Anyone can say insulting things so there are many insulting matches in the forum (hence the warlords have a million posts under their belts).

I just took a quick look right now and here’s a snapshot of the Scorntree culture featuring the 3 characters in one post. Click here to embiggen the photo!

So basically you don’t want to be a part of this forum because in real life, you probably won’t be talking to these people even if they’re right in front of you. So why bother? There are other useful travel forums out there where the people are actually friendly and the posts are not mind-bogglingly idiotic. Try BootsnAll for instance.

Or better yet, follow travel blogs. There are millions of travel blogs out there who can give the best answer to your burning travel question. And they don’t bite.

You’re welcome.

Saving your dollars and your sanity,

oddly enough the member ‘jakollen’ is “removed” from TT now, must have lost her cool

I actually think the TT forum improved a bit from the early years. Yeah it is unfortunate there are quite a few prolific posters there who add nothing and seem to enjoy putting others down. Just ignore them like you would everywhere else on the internet and in real life.

I wonder about bootsnall though – what happened to them? I used to love that site but now I can’t see the tab for the forum or the articles anymore. No wonder nobody posts to the forum if you can’t see the link – duh. What on earth happened there?

      It probably died as well.

Not sure how old this article is but there isn’t much point sending people to BootsnAll… you’re lucky if they get 5 posts a week these days.
I was an active member for many years and as sad as it makes me, I’ve just given up. There’s no one left on the boards except the occasional newbie and about 3-4 old times who check in more and more sporadically. Sad times.

(I also think LP is good for ideas of things to do in a place and logistics of getting a to b, although you are right that their prices are always out of date, but that’s the nature of money)

Couldn’t agree more, so much negativity on these forums. Everyone speaks as if their own personal experience is absolute fact. There’s no help for the budget traveller or nomad either, the only responses you’ll get are “no that’s a stupid idea, impossible, it will never work out, just stay at home”. Disgusting, I hate Lonely Planet.
